Goodbye, Meat...

Monday, June 02, 2008

If you've ever driven through Central California, you've seen that "farm" with all the hundreds of cows practically piled on top of each other. You've also probably seen the semis loaded with cows on their way to become our meals.

That was the final straw. It tugged on our heart strings to see them with their innocent eyes along side our drive. And it was then that D and I agreed to attempt (I say "attempt" because it may not be as simple as we think it will be) to rid meat from our diet. Plain and simple: if we had to catch and kill our meals, D and I would never be able to do it.

This change isn't a cold-turkey attempt, but rather the step down approach. Besides, we had just been shopping before we left and don't want to waste our food. Since we've been back, we've only had meat a handful of times and have replaced our meat in-take with soy-based meat-like products.

Personally, I thought I would dislike a lot of these products, but I've been surprised. I'd have to say, however, I will miss sushi.........

OMG. Why would you go from eating Big Macs to not eating meat? There is a middle ground. You can only buy meat and fish from farmers who raise their animals in sustainable and humane ways. Living in Seattle, you have many such options.

Unfortunately, it's not just the way the animals are treated in the meat farms. It's the fact that they're animals that I can't stomach anymore.

And being in Seattle is great to not eat meat. The regular chain groceries carries so many meat-less alternatives!
